Met Gala 2018: Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination

Met Gala 2018: Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination

Today is the day I wait for all year, the Met Gala a.k.a. Fashion's biggest night - a charity fundraiser to benefit the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute and to celebrate its latest exhibition opening. The night is centered on the theme of the new exhibition and this years theme is Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination

Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination will feature 40 Vatican vestments and accessories from 15 papacies that have never left the Vatican's possession before shown alongside pieces by Coco Chanel, John Galliano, Cristóbal Balenciaga and Donatella Versace.

The Met Gala 2018 theme is said to be the Met's most controversial yet, due to fashion garments being shown alongside sacred artefacts. Andrew Bolton, the Costume Institutes curator in charge, said at a press conference in Rome: "Some might consider fashion to be an unfitting or unseemly medium by which to engage with ideas about the sacred or the divine, but dress is central to any discussion about religion... It affirms religious allegiances and, by extension, it asserts religious differences."

I have to admit, when I heard the theme I wondered how I would talk about the theme with Children's Trends. Then, I quickly realized that religious ceremonies have dress codes and the priest wears several different vestments at Mass, and each has a history and a prayer that is said as the priest puts it on - the ritual is centered around dressing and prayer. The Pope's vestments are of the finest silk with beautiful embroideries of gold thread and I think the Catholic Religion does influence ideas about dress which is why I decided to share First Communion dresses and suits, since the sacrament of First Communion is an important tradition for Catholic families and children. If you are not religious, like me, these girl's dresses and boy's suits are also modern and stunning for family weddings or parties. I am loving modesty in girl's dresses with fluted or flared sleeves, high necklines, ruffle or pleated collars, amazing lace, full gathered skirts and black or navy trim; for boy's suits I am loving thoughtful tailoring, modern & slim cut, chest pockets, single breasted and black or navy trim.
