Someone's in the Kitchen with Mama: Baking Spritz Cookies with Mario in San Francisco
It was a chilly weekend in San Francisco, making it the perfect time to turn on the oven and bake. Mario loves baking with me, and I love baking with him! It reminds me of my first experience in the kitchen with my grandma, measuring sugar, stirring with a big wooden spoon until my little arm ached, and, of course, licking the beaters! I’ll never forget the warmth, aroma, teamwork, and loving memories.
These are fond memories, and it makes me happy to create new ones with Mario. I also use our time in the kitchen as an opportunity to teach him counting, measuring, sharing, patience, and the importance of real, food-based nutrition. Plus, when we’re done, we get to enjoy dessert together! I love knowing that what we bake doesn’t contain the additives, preservatives, artificial sweeteners, and colors often found in store-bought desserts. I prefer baking and cooking for Mario rather than giving him processed foods.
This weekend, Mario and I baked simple Spritz Cookies in the shape of trees—his favorite. I made these “Cookie Trees” for Christmas a few years ago, and ever since, Mario has called them by that name. I usually use Martha Stewart’s recipe for Spritz Cookies, but this weekend we tried a new one from Pampered Chef. I can’t decide which recipe I like best, but one thing’s for sure: nothing beats having a little helper in the kitchen! And according to Mario, the cookies are “Delicious!”
