DIY Patchwork Denim for Kids: How to Personalize Your Child’s Favorite Jeans

DIY Patchwork Denim for Kids: How to Personalize Your Child’s Favorite Jeans

I don’t know about your child, but my son’s favorite jeans are lived-in, loved, and worn-out. With denim trends this spring focusing more on DIY than wash, I love that I can patch his favorite jeans and they still look cool—not like hand-me-downs. On the spring runways, DKNY, Alexander McQueen, and Junya Watanabe all showcased patchwork denim. This trend will eventually make its way to children's wear, but in the meantime, you can personalize your child’s favorite denim by patching, embellishing, doodling, splattering, and even printing to reflect their unique style.

I plan to hit the craft store and buy patches for my son’s favorite jeans, but I also love these easy options for patching up the worn-out knees from playground adventures. Fashionable and functional—what’s not to love? I’ll be posting more about the patched denim trend with options to buy soon, but until then, I’m all about these DIY ideas to patch your child’s denim with love.

These mended jeans from boostitch are like a work of art. The pick-stitch is called a sashiko stitch and adds a beautiful rippling texture. Traditional sashiko stitching was used by Japanese to fortify the clothing and was normally used on a blue indigo fabric with white stitching thread (so it is perfect for mending denim). If you would like to learn more about how to execute this beautiful Patch see the technique of "sashiko" at quilt studio
